In mid December of last year, Affinity Tool Works, LLC, a privately owned global tool company based in Troy, Michigan, announced that it had streamlined two of its established product lines — BORA® Tool and PortaMate — into BORA PortaMate to reflect one cohesive category brand. The rebranding announcement coincided with the company’s acquisition of Centipede Tool, LLC, manufacturer of the Centipede® Support System, located in Williamsburg, New Mexico.

Under the new branding, PortaMate products and Centipede Tool’s work stations are combined, along with the BORA Tool line, into BORA PortaMate as the main overarching brand for the company. Affinity Tool Works is now a separate division as the exclusive U.S. distributor for HTC, Tormek, Sjobergs and FISCH products.

“BORA Tool carries significant recognition for consumers and in the marketplace as a trusted, reliable brand,” says Todd Gluski, brand manager for Affinity Tool Works and BORA PortaMate. “The rebranding direction better defines our company to our customers in a crowded and competitive tool line space. With the addition of Centipede Tool’s portable work stations to our product mix, BORA PortaMate expands our distribution channel both domestically and internationally and further establishes our position in the marketplace as a leading provider of innovative tools and accessories.”

The company has also launched a new website for BORA PortaMate, which you can visit by clicking here.

“We’re excited to have found a partner that shares our vision for the potential of our portable workbench technology to support any task, anywhere,” says Keith Fyhr, co-founder of Centipede Tool, LLC.  “With new models and accessories on the horizon, the Centipede® Support System will continue to become an even more essential portable work support companion on every jobsite and in busy woodshops around the world.”

Affinity Tool Works was established in 2006 as a manufacturer and distributor of tools and workshop accessories that serve a variety of markets including building and remodeling, do-it-yourselfers, industrial and woodworking. As the BORA PortaMate lines and popularity among both professional craftsman and hobbyists alike has grown over the years, so has its overall brand identity.

BORA PortaMate is a provider of professional tools serving a variety of markets including building and remodeling, do-it-yourself, industrial and woodworking. Designed to increase productivity, simplify complex tasks and help produce consistent professional results, product brands include BORA Tool, PortaMate, Centipede Tool and HTC Products. The Affinity Tool Works division is the exclusive North American distributor for FISCH cutting and drilling tools, Tormek sharpening systems and Sjobergs workbenches.

“Since the rebranding in December, we’ve been receiving extremely positive feedback from customers regarding the change,” Gluski says. “They love the new look of the products and marketing collateral as well as the simplicity of the united brand. Products in the new colors are already beginning to roll out with many more coming in the next few months.”

Hitachi’s One-Gallon Oil-Free Ultra Quiet Air Compressor (Model EC28M) is the first in the company’s new Low Noise Series. It produces only 59 dB of sound when it cycles, which is below the level of a normal conversation. Equipped with an industrial oil-free pump and overload protection, this “hot dog” compressor promises durability with virtually no maintenance.

Compared to other compressors with universal motors, Hitachi’s EC28M has a 2.8 amp direct-drive induction motor for more efficient and reliable performance. The motor also incorporates an overload protection circuit that stops it in a possible overheating situation. It produces 0.8 cubic feet per minute (cfm) of air at 90 psi and 1.3 cfm at 40 psi. The locking regulator and 90 lbs. on/125 lbs. off pressure switch means you don’t have to worry about the pressure wandering during operation or a pressure-starved tool on the job.

A steel roll cage protects the integrated control panel that centralizes the industrial regulator and gauges for simple operation and pressure adjustment. A stainless-steel braided discharge hose resists corrosion and remains flexible. Other convenient features include the easy-to-use ball valve drain cock for tank draining, shock absorbing feet that reduce vibration and minimize crawling and a factory installed universal quick coupler that’s ready for plug-and-play tool functionality. An ergonomically shaped rubber carry handle makes the 25.2-lb. compressor easier to transport.

Hitachi’s EC28M One-Gallon Oil-free Quiet Compressor is available now and sells for $149.97.

How to Eliminate Mice Odors? https://www.woodworkersjournal.com/eliminate-mice-odors/ Tue, 27 Feb 2018 14:45:04 +0000 http://rocklerwj.wpengine.com/?p=42789 What's the best way to seal in the mice odors on these vintage drawers?

This cabinet was custom-made to accept the drawers, which came from my grandfather’s grocery store.  The drawers were refinished, but they still maintain an odor inside from mice nests from the past. We need suggestions as to how and what to use to seal the inside of these drawers to eliminate this odor. The wood is a soft wood, possibly poplar. – Bob Stoll

Chris Marshall: Bob, your best hope for sealing in those rodent smells is shellac. It makes an excellent barrier coat over all wood species, and it sticks to almost anything, including urine (which, let’s face it, is probably some or even most of the residual odor you are smelling). Zinsser makes a great product for this purpose, called Bullseye® SealCoat™. It’s a clear dewaxed shellac that you can apply to those drawer interiors easily with a brush. It dries quickly and should help to diminish that mice smell. And since it doesn’t contain wax, you can apply other finishes like lacquer or varnish over it — they’ll stick just fine. SealCoat is also handy to have around the shop as a general purpose wood finish and sanding sealer. So, I’m sure you’ll find other uses for what’s left of the quart you buy.

Multiple carry handles make the 15-lb. vacuum easier to lift, when needed.

My first hollow wooden surfboard from balsa ply and cedar. 7′ fun board with thruster fins and a vent to allow airflow. It is about 15 lbs out of the water but floats very similar to a foam board. Cant wait to build the next one. I’m going bigger!

In the last issue, Rob asked you to share “unlikely wooden solutions to regular problems.” Here are the tales we heard. – Editor

“I was remodeling two dormer room ceilings. I was installing new insulation and drywall due to damage done by tree limbs in a storm. I needed a way of lifting the drywall to the ceiling. Knowing that it was going to be a lengthy job only working a few hours a day, the cost of renting a lift would be more than I could afford. I sat down and with pencil and paper and, after a couple of sketches, I came up with a suitable design that I could work with by myself to lift the ½-inch thick sheets up to install them. I made two wood base “T”s with wooden stretchers separating them about four and a half feet apart.” – James Sholtis

“I needed a 5-inch pulley with a 5/8-inch shaft hole. I used two pieces of 3/8-inch Baltic birch plywood, cut out the 5-inch circles, drilled the 5/8-inch hole, beveled the two pieces on edge and glued them together, forming the groove. I then screwed the pulley to a spacer block that was epoxied to the shaft. It works great.” – George Tritthardt

“My grandmother was a cook on a cattle ranch in northern California. It had long water troughs hollowed out from one log. It looked old in the 1950s.” – Jim Ware
