Woodturning Monthly

Chris Marshall photoButterfly inlays were all the rage several years ago for accentuating the cracks in slab-style tables. When done well, I think they can look great, and I’ve installed several on my own projects. But when it comes to bowls, I’ve always tried to dry my green blanks so as not to end up with cracks. Sometimes, however, the cracks are inevitable. In those instances, Ed Pretty reaches for a compact router and his inlay bushing kit to create tiny butterfly patches for bowl repairs. You can read all about it in this issue’s AAW feature article. Ed’s method will require patience and precision, but the result could be a solution that saves a prized bowl from a landfill while adding a masterful detail. I like his closing thought, too: Adding a butterfly inlay is a wonderful way of honoring the natural ruggedness of wood. Consider giving it a try!
